City centre is the address hotels stretch furthest, because the word centre has no edge. A property beside the ring road, twenty minutes by tram from the old town, will still call itself central. The advantage that earns the label is narrower: you leave the front door and reach the main square, the museums and the good restaurants on foot, in the time it takes to finish a coffee. That saves taxis, but more importantly it changes the shape of the day. You can go back to the room at four, change and return for dinner without planning the evening around transport.
Before booking, ask for the walking time to two or three specific places rather than to the centre in general. Ask whether the street is pedestrianised or a bus route, and what the hotel does about noise from bars beneath the windows. Ask about the last stretch from the station or airport, since central often means the car has to stop two streets away.

Will a city centre hotel be noisy?
It can be, and the best ones tell you so honestly. Look for rooms on upper floors facing a courtyard, secondary glazing and a street closed to traffic. A hotel on a pedestrian square is often calmer at night than one on a quiet looking side street with a bar.
Do I still need a car or a transport pass?
For the centre itself, no. You may want one for a day trip or the airport run. A truly central hotel will tell you which station is nearest, how long the walk takes with luggage, and whether a taxi can stop at the door or only at the end of the street.
