Dogs welcome is one of the most loosely used phrases in hospitality. It can mean a hotel that tolerates a small dog in a ground floor room, or one that has actually planned for animals. The difference shows on the second evening, when the dog needs a walk after dark, the restaurant will not seat you together and the lawn is fenced off. A hotel that genuinely welcomes dogs has thought about bowls, bedding, grass within reach of the door and where the two of you sit at breakfast. Its staff know the nearest vet and which paths allow dogs off the lead.
Before booking, ask three plain questions. Is there a size or breed limit, and does the dog sleep in the room rather than a kennel? May it stay in the room alone for an hour, or must someone be present at all times? And which parts of the house are open to dogs, particularly the terrace, the bar and the garden?

Often, and it is rarely stated on the booking page. Many houses cap the weight or allow only one dog per room, and some exclude certain breeds outright. We note the limit on every hotel page and ask you to confirm it with the hotel before you travel.
Can I leave my dog alone in the room?
Policies differ widely. Some hotels allow a dog alone for a set period if it stays quiet, others insist on constant company or offer a sitter. Our listing states which applies, because it decides whether you can have dinner or a spa hour without the dog.
What about the cleaning fee and extra charges?
Most hotels charge a nightly rate or a one-off cleaning fee for the dog, and some ask for a deposit. We do not list amounts because they change, but every hotel page says whether a charge exists and what it covers, so there are no surprises at checkout.
