Hotels that climb the cliff and arrive by water
The coast between Positano and Vietri sul Mare is built for hotels that climb rather than spread. The classic houses are converted monasteries and villas stacked into the cliff, with lifts down to a private bathing platform and terraces shaded by lemon trees. Capri, twenty minutes across the water, plays a different game: small palaces around the Piazzetta and a handful of quieter houses on the Anacapri side, where the island is still farmed. The advantages here are beachfront in the literal sense, boat transfers from Naples arranged by the hotel, spa floors carved into rock and kitchens with Michelin stars.
The season runs from Easter to early November; July and August are hot and crowded. Regulars come in May or late September, book a house with its own boat and treat the road as something to avoid. On Capri they stay a night or two after the day trippers leave on the last ferry.
