AirportsVelana International (MLE) on Hulhulé next to Malé is the only long haul gateway; seaplanes leave from its own terminal, and domestic flights to Gan, Maamigili or Hanimaadhoo serve the outer atolls.
Nowhere else does the one island, one resort rule apply so strictly, and it changes how you choose. Nobody wanders to a better beach next door; the house you book is the whole world for a week. That makes the differences between them matter more than anywhere else: the depth of the house reef, whether the overwater villas face sunrise or sunset, how far the seaplane flies, and whether children are welcomed or kept away. Adults only islands, family islands with nannies and slides, and small barefoot places with fewer than thirty villas exist within a few atolls of each other.
The dry north east monsoon from December to April brings calm lagoons and the clearest water. Regulars go in May or November instead, when the islands are quieter and the dive sites on the western atolls fill with mantas. They check the transfer: a domestic flight plus a speedboat can add three hours to a long day.
