AirportsMarrakech Menara is fifteen minutes from the medina with direct flights from most European cities; Casablanca is the long haul hub, about three hours away by train or road.
Marrakech is the rare city where the most desirable hotels have no facade at all. The riads of the medina, courtyard houses with five to twelve rooms around a fountain and a roof terrace, are run by owners who cook breakfast themselves and know which derb is quiet. Outside the walls, the Palmeraie and the Route de l'Ourika hold the large houses: walled estates with private pools, gardens of olive and palm, and spas built around the hammam.
Small, quiet and adults only are the natural strengths here; families do better in the Palmeraie, where there is space to run. Go from March to May or in October and November, when days are warm and evenings ask for a jumper; July and August belong to those who love heat. The Atlas is ninety minutes away, so regulars pair three medina nights with two in the mountains and let the hotel arrange the driver.
