The South Pacific is where the overwater bungalow was invented, and the lagoons of Bora Bora and Moorea still carry the most famous examples, glass floors and all. Beyond them the picture is more varied than the postcards suggest. Fiji runs to private islands with a dozen bures and a resident dive team, and to family resorts on the Coral Coast with nannies and kids' clubs that actually work. Tahiti's outer islands, Tikehau and Rangiroa among them, keep small pensions and quiet lodges where the reef is the only neighbour.
Advantages come easily here: beachfront by definition, private pools on most decks, adults only on several motu, and spa treatments that draw on monoi and coconut. The dry season from May to October brings the calmest water and the humpback whales. Insiders skip the main island entirely and take the first flight out, then stay longer in fewer places.
