AirportsCape Town International is the gateway, twenty minutes from the city and about an hour from the Winelands, with direct flights from Europe in season; Johannesburg is the main domestic hub.
Cape Town's hotel landscape has three distinct characters. On the Atlantic seaboard, small houses of ten to twenty rooms sit below the Twelve Apostles with sea views and plunge pools. In the city bowl, Victorian and Cape Dutch buildings have become design hotels with serious kitchens. An hour east, the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer estate hotels where vineyard, restaurant and spa belong to the same family, and where silence after dark is the point.
Families and dog owners find more room and warmer welcomes in the Winelands than on the seaboard, where houses are tight and stairs are steep. The season runs from October to April; February and March bring the harvest and the calmest sea, while June to August is green, wet and quiet, with whales off Hermanus. Regulars split the stay, city first and estate last, and never fix a Table Mountain day in advance because the cloud decides.
