The coast where the season is longer than the crowds
The Riviera runs from Menton at the Italian border to Saint Tropez, and its hotel landscape is as varied as its coastline. Belle Époque grand hotels line the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and the Croisette in Cannes, while the Cap d’Antibes and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat hold former private estates that are now houses with their own rocks, pontoons and sea water pools. Inland, above Grasse and in the villages of the Var, small country hotels with a pool and a terrace offer a much quieter alternative to the seafront.
Advantages here are beachfront access, private pools, sea views, starred kitchens, and a run of golf courses behind Cannes and Mougins. The obvious months are July and August, but regulars come in May, June and September, when the water is warm, tables are available and the coast road moves. Insiders stay a little inland and drive down to the sea for the day.
