SeasonSpring and early autumn are the terrace months, December belongs to the markets and the balls follow in January and February, while July and August are hot, quieter in the concert halls and generous with free rooms.
AirportsVienna International Airport at Schwechat is the only gateway, sixteen minutes from the centre by City Airport Train or half an hour by S-Bahn, and Bratislava serves as an alternative an hour away by road.
Vienna keeps more true grand hotels within walking distance of each other than almost any city in Europe, and most of them sit on or just inside the Ringstrasse, a short walk from the opera, the museums and the Hofburg. The style is late nineteenth century in the public rooms and quietly modern upstairs. Around them a second generation has grown up in the seventh and second districts: converted printing houses, palais with courtyard gardens and small owner-run houses above coffee houses where breakfast is a serious matter.
Families do well here because the city is compact and the trams are simple, dogs are allowed on the trams with lead and muzzle and are welcome in more hotels than visitors expect, and the Wienerwald begins where the tram ends. Regulars come in November and January, when the concert season is at full strength and the rooms are calm. May and September are the months for terraces and the Heurigen.
