Artist Residence London opened in 2014 on Cambridge Street, a quiet residential run of white stucco terraces a few minutes from Victoria. Justin Salisbury and Charlotte Newey, who had started with a guesthouse in Brighton, spent a year on the listed Cubitt era townhouse and did the rooms themselves, working with a different artist on each one. The result is not a themed hotel but a house where an old field gate becomes a headboard, tea crates become drawers, exposed brick sits beside jewel coloured velvet and prints by Dan Hillier and The Connor Brothers hang where a chain would put a mirror.

There are only ten rooms across three floors and no lift, which matters if you travel with heavy cases, though the staff carry them. The two suites have the most space, and the Loft up under the roof is the room with the field gate headboard. Downstairs, Cambridge Street Kitchen serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to guests and neighbours alike, and the house cocktail bar takes over in the evening.

Dogs are genuinely welcome rather than tolerated. Selected rooms take them for a modest nightly charge, and a bed, bowls and treats are set out before you arrive. Pimlico Road with its antique dealers is a short walk, the Saturday farmers market about ten minutes on foot, and Tate Britain is fifteen minutes along the river.
