Behind a wall on Place du Chancelier Adenauer in the sixteenth arrondissement stands something Paris rarely offers: a freestanding mansion with about five thousand square metres of garden. It went up in 1892 as the home of the Fondation Thiers, which gave scholarships and lodgings to gifted students, on the site of the city's first balloon landing field. In the 1980s it became the Saint James Club, decorated by Andrée Putman; it has been run as a hotel and club since 1991 and joined Relais & Châteaux in 2011.
Laura Gonzalez led the renovation that reopened the house in spring 2021. Her rooms mix Japanese wallpapers, Chinese antiques and contemporary furniture, and the Junior Suites spread over one or two floors, those at the top set out like a winter garden. Xavier de Chirac reshaped the garden as a walk that changes colour and scent through the year. The library bar keeps the leather-bound books, winding staircase and coffered ceiling of the Thiers students and is shared by hotel guests and members of the Saint James Club.
The Guerlain spa covers about four hundred square metres over two floors, with a fifteen metre pool beneath a glass roof, a hammam, sauna, whirlpool and three treatment rooms. At Bellefeuille, Grégory Garimbay holds a Michelin star in the 2026 guide and cooks largely from an organic kitchen garden and orchard in Seine-et-Marne. Well-behaved dogs are accepted for a nightly supplement, and bicycles are lent free of charge for rides into the nearby Bois de Boulogne.
