The Bela Vista was one of the first hotels in the Algarve. António Júdice de Magalhães Barros built the house on the cliff at Praia da Rocha in 1918, and between 1934 and 1936 his cousin Henrique Bívar de Vasconcelos converted it into a hotel. The Neo-Manueline palacete has kept its azulejo panels illustrating The Lusiads and its stained glass, and in 2007 the process of classifying it as a site of public interest began.
The 38 rooms are split between the palacete and two further buildings, Casa Azul and Casa Jardim; the sea view categories are in the palacete and in Casa Azul. Below the terrace lies Praia da Rocha, reached by the hotel's own access down the cliff, and the heated pool above it looks straight out over the Atlantic towards the sunset. The Spa by L'Occitane has five private treatment rooms, a plunge pool, a sauna, a jacuzzi and a Turkish bath, with the sea in view.
Most evenings here revolve around Vista. Chef João Oliveira has held a Michelin star there since 2017 and cooks two menus from Tuesday to Saturday: Menu Vista, built on fish and seafood from the Algarve coast, and Menu Terra, which is vegetarian. The evening starts with appetisers in the kitchen before guests are seated. Children under twelve are not taken, and the hotel closes from the beginning of November to the end of February.

The hotel closes from November to February. May, June and late September bring long days, a less crowded Praia da Rocha and easier tables at Vista, which serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday only.
The Vista evening begins with appetisers in the kitchen before you are seated; reserve the menu when you book the room, and take a drink by the pool first to watch the sun set over the Atlantic.
Faro Airport (FAO) is about 75 km to the east, around an hour by car or taxi on the A22 motorway. Lisbon is 280 km away, a little over two hours by car, or you can take the train to Portimão station.
